Rwanda U-18 men’s basketball team has lined up three build-up matches as they seek to enhance their preparations for the African U-18 basketball tournament slated for Maputo-Mozambique from August 16-30.

According to the president of Rwanda Basketball Federation Desire Mugwiza, the proposal to have a training camp in Gabon is not yet finalized but says friendlies against top local clubs APR and Espoir will provide the coach with good knowledge on where and how to improve the team before the continental show piece.

“We want to take the boys to Gabon for training because the weather is similar to the one in Mozambique and they also have a good team which would provide us with good knowledge on how our team is faring but since nothing is finalized, but we have secured friendlies with APR and Espoir,” Mugwiza told this paper.

Rwanda beat Kenya 68-29 and 96-34 respectively to claim the zonal qualification slot and the junior hoops team have since returned back to residential camp at La Pallise Nyadungu to intensify their training sessions which are held twice daily at Amahoro

 

 

 

APR were this weekend were crowned champions of the Rwanda Basketball league, in both men and women category. In their last fixture, in men category APR thrashed Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) by 110 points to 63 to claim the title. The victory was a convincing one for a star-studded side like APR who have in the previous seasons dominated in the Rwanda Basketball League.

In other related news starting this coming Saturday at Nyagatare in Eastern Province, Imbuto Foundation will be organizing a tournament that is directed towards the fight against malaria. Participating teams will be made up of three members per team as opposed to the usual 5.

 

The much anticipated playoff match between APR BC and Espoir BC that was supposed to take place yesterday never kicked off after ESPOIR BC were handed a walkover by the Rwanda Basketball Association, because they failed to turn up. Sources from inside ESPOIR BC reveal that the failure to turn up was due to the fact that one of their players Christophe Wazaura (alias Pappy), had lost his mother the previous Friday, and as a result the club was getting behind him to support him through that trying period.

The sources continue to indicate that the club had officially requested the Federation to postpone the match to the following weekend but instead the match was postponed until Tuesday, a day when they were still mourning the death of their colleague’s mother.

 

The walkover handed APR BC a chance to advance to the finals and they will now see a rivalry renewed as they will face Kigali Basketball Club (KBC), who are also the defending champions of the league. KBC had seen off Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) by 66-57 in a match they dominated throughout the four quarters.

D’après les sources du quotidien ougandais New Vision où ce joueur vient d’accorder une interview, les négociations entre les deux parties vont bon train. Sauf imprévus, il pourrait signer au cours du mois de janvier prochain.

 

Dans ses déclarations, il explique : « Les tractations continuent mais ce n’est pas encore terminé. La raison principale est que le championnat rwandais n’est pas encore débuté car ils sont dans les matchs des play-offs. Sitôt le championnat entamé, les négociations aboutiront.

 

Brian Gumisiriza, le directeur chargé du planning quotidien dans l’équipe de Warriors déclare à nos confrères que les négociations en vue d’une prolongation de contrat avec Malinga sont en cours. « Mais si les discussions avec APR BC aboutissent, nous respecterons son choix puisque ce sont ses intérêts qui priment » a-t-il dit.

 

APR BC est dans une optique descendante depuis que Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) vient de remporter le championnat rwandais consécutivement pendant qu’APR BC s’est classé en troisième position cette année. D’où son souhait de redorer son blason qui était le sien les années précédentes avant l’émergence de KBC. Nous avons voulu en savoir plus davantage de ce dossier auprès des autorités d’APPR BC, les démarches ont été vaines.
