The Miami Heat reached their third straight Eastern Conference final after a 94-91 win over Chicago on Wednesday secured a 4-1 series victory for the defending NBA champions.

Miami will face the winners of the series between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers. Indiana currently lead 3-1 going into Thursday’s Game Five in New York.

A series that began with a Chicago upset win in Miami and included some fierce, physical encounters, ended with a strange game as Miami blew an 18-point first quarter lead but somehow managed to claw their way back to victory.

“It was very challenging to be up like we were and then to be down like we were in second half. Mentally, we had to not get too high, not get too low in the whole game,” said Miami’s LeBron James, who ended with 23 points.

“Emotionally, this game took a lot out of both teams,” added the league MVP, who said he was left with “no energy”.

The Heat made a blistering start, putting up 10 unanswered points to start the game and upped their advantage to 18 in the first quarter but once again the Bulls fought back.

Miami’s sharp movement of the ball fell away dramatically, as did their shooting, as Chicago, led by the livewire Nate Robinson and powerhouse Carlos Boozer, roared back.

Chicago led 53-47 at the half and went into the fourth quarter with a 77-69 advantage but Miami got their second wind when it mattered.

A three-pointer from Shane Battier and a Chris Anderson dunk helped Miami close the gap before Norris Cole’s left-handed dunk put the Heat back in the lead with 6:40 left on the clock.

Still the Bulls kept on scrapping and it was not until Jimmy Butler’s hopeful three-point attempt in the final moments was off-target that Miami could finally celebrate.

Dwyane Wade, who has struggled with his knee, provided 18 points and some crucial defensive plays for Miami in the fourth quarter.

Boozer ended with 26 points and 14 rebounds as the depleted Bulls, who played without their star Derrick Rose throughout the season, finally bowed out.

While Miami won the best-of-seven series in five games, that outcome masks the determination of a Bulls team that were also robbed of Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau said the way his team fought back from a big early deficit summed up his team’s year.

“It is sort of the story of the season. Obviously we are disappointed in losing the series but I was never disappointed in the team,” he told reporters. “I thought our team fought hard all year. There was no quit in them.”

The Heat’s quality and depth proved to be too much though.

“You have to give them a lot of credit. They are a great team. They are not going to beat themselves, you have to beat them,” said Thibodeau.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said the Bulls had shown their resilience throughout the series.

“We knew right from the beginning that we would have to earn everything we got. That certainly played out to be true,” he said. “They made it extremely tough but in the fourth quarter we were able to change the momentum and finally turn the corner.”

Steve Blake, back-up point guard of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers has encouraged local basketball players to show heart, have a strong work-ethic and “most importantly” self-belief in order to see out their dreams of playing professional basketball.

The current Laker and former Portland Trailblazers star left the country today having spent nine days conducting training clinics for coaches and players alike.

The 32-year old also came to Rwanda to visit with some of the projects that he partners with New Life Ministries, an NGO that looks after orphans and also provides education to impoverished children, help hundreds of women and street children receive vocational training.

Blake also on Thursday featured for a select side in a friendly match-up against league champions KBC.

Back during his unveiling with Miami in July 2010, LeBron James promised Heat fans he would bring them “not two, not three… not seven” but maybe even more NBA championships.

While seven or eight may be a stretch, “King James” delivered at least one after the Heat ousted the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games in the NBA Finals. After all, you need to win one to get to eight, right?

It took James until his ninth season to claim his maiden title. But this victory could open the floodgates. It’s not just that he won, it is how he won.

LeBron has always posted incredible numbers during his career. But statistics do not always tell the whole story. That’s why, despite being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the third time this season, critics still took shots at his inability to perform when the chips were down.

Critics pointed to his final playoff series with the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2010, which included a 32-point home loss at the hands of the Boston Celtics, where James was accused of melting under the pressure.

They also said LeBron shied away from taking the big shot during last season’s Finals, which saw Miami blow a 2-1 series lead as the Dallas Mavericks claimed the title.

This time around, Miami took care of business, and it was with LeBron as the focal point. He was relentless from start to finish. In a team which also boasts superstar Dwyane Wade, James made clear that he would defer to no one. “King James” would earn his crown on his own.

James averaged more than 30 points per game during this season’s playoff run, including a 30-point first half in Boston. He would finish with 45 points in that game, as the Heat avoided elimination and went on to win the series.

Coincidentally, that 30-point first half happened a day after NBA legend and basketball analyst Charles Barkley pleaded for LeBron to put the Heat on his back and carry them to the Promised Land.

“King James” did just that. And by putting the Heat on his back en route to the title, he got the monkey off of it. The critics are a thing of the past. What does the future hold?

Miami fans hope not two, not three… not seven, but maybe more titles for “King James.”

Miami a remporté jeudi le deuxième titre de champion NBA de son histoire, après 2006, en battant Oklahoma City 4 victoires à 1 grâce à un succès 121-106 dans le cinquième match de la finale. C’est un Lebron James faramineux pendant cette finale qui a porté Miami au titre de champion NBA. Le premier pour lui, auquel il ajoute la distinction de MVP de la finale.

Le King a enfin sa couronne. Lebron James, après neuf ans passés sur les parquets NBA, a enfilé cette nuit sa première bague de champion au terme de sa troisième finale. The Choosen One avait décidé de ne pas laisser passer cette nouvelle chance qui se présentait à lui et au Miami Heat après une finale 2011 frustrante enlevée par Dallas (4-2). Alors James a pris les choses en main à l’image de cette ultime rencontre au terme de laquelle il a signé le seul triple double de la série (26 points, 13 rebonds, 13 passes décisives) et permis au Heat de balayer Oklahoma (121-106). En cinq matches, James, élu MVP des finales, a compilé 28,6 points, 10,2 rebonds et 7,4 passes décisives de moyenne.

Miami s’impose 4 victoires à 1 et décroche son deuxième titre après 2006. Si Wade décroche sa deuxième couronne, Bosh et James s’invitent pour la première fois au palmarès.

Dans ce cinquième match, Miami n’a jamais été mené, a creusé l’écart lors d’un troisième quart temps (36-22) de toute beauté et a mené de 27 points grâce à une adresse diabolique à trois points (54% de réussite) et un engagement permanent sous les panneaux. Miami a attaqué fort, porté par Mike Miller (4 sur 4 à longue distance) et avec un LeBron James toujours aussi présent à l’intérieur et bien trop dur à stopper pour James Harden. James comptait déjà 7 points et trois fautes adverses après seulement six minutes de jeu (15 pts à la pause) mais était en permanence mis au défi par Kevin Durant (14 pts à la mi-temps).

Le Heat entamait le deuxième quart temps en tête (31-26) et, bien aidé par les erreurs de précipitation (passes interceptées, fautes évitables) et l’inefficacité aux tirs d’OKC (36% à la mi-temps), portait son avance à +17 (48-36) lors d’un passage de cinq minutes (14-2) sous l’impulsion d’un Bosh combatif comme jamais (24 pts, 7 rbds) et un Wade très actif (20 pts, 8rbds). OKC laissait passer l’orage finissait le deuxième quart temps avec un retard plus négociable (59-49) et revenait même à 5 points (56-61) mais Mario Chalmers et Shane Battier continuaient de poignarder le Thunder à trois points pour maintenir Miami hors de portée. Le Thunder, dépassé, avait beaucoup de mal à défendre sur des Heat ultra-agressifs qui enchaînaient donc les lancers francs.

Miami finissait le troisième quart temps sur un passage à 26-9 complètement ébouriffant, avec une adresse hors du commun (62% à trois points dans ce quart temps) et un Bosh déchaîné (10 points en quatre minutes durant un 16-2), pendant que le Thunder se liquéfiait dans une salle en fusion. L’incroyable remplaçant Mike Miller enfonçait le clou en début de dernier quart temps avec ses sixième et septième paniers à trois points (sur 8 !) et, même si OKC parvenait à réduire légèrement le score, le sort de la finale en était jeté. Miami sortait tous ses titulaires à trois minutes de la fin.  Après être passé au travers en 2011, le Heat décroche le Graal. Le premier d’une longue série ? Miami s’est mis en position de remporter dès jeudi le deuxième titre de champion NBA de son histoire en battant Oklahoma City (104-98) mardi à domicile lors du match N.4 de la finale. Le Heat mène désormais trois victoires à une dans cette série au meilleur des sept matches avec l’avantage de jouer le prochain match dans sa salle. En cas de défaite de Miami jeudi, la série continuera dimanche à Oklahoma City. A l’issue du match le plus intense et le plus spectaculaire jusque-là de cette finale, le Heat, mené de 17 points dans le premier quart temps, a montré une belle cohésion collective pour revenir au score et maintenir le cap malgré le match monumental de Russell Westbrook (43 points), trop seul pour OKC dans le dernier quart temps (17 pts sur les 23 du Thunder). “Mes stats ne veulent rien dire car on a perdu”, a réagi Westbrook. “Russell nous a maintenu dans le match, a dit son entraîneur Scott Brooks. Il a nous manqué de concrétiser deux ou trois actions à la fin, c’est tout.”

Malgré ses 28 points, l’autre vedette du Thunder, Kevin Durant, a été transparent dans la dernière période (6 pts), où il n’a pris que trois shoots, encore une fois gênée par la défense très serrée sur lui.

LeBron James a de nouveau été le principal artisan de la victoire du Heat en frôlant le triple double (au moins dix unités dans trois catégories statistiques) avec 26 points, 9 rebonds et 12 passes mais le meneur Mario Chalmers (25 points) a joué un rôle capital dans le dernier quart temps (12 pts à 80% de réussite) et n’a pas manqué un panier à deux points du match. “Sans ce qu’a fait Mario dans le dernier quart temps, on ne gagne pas ce match”, a souligné Dwyane Wade, auteur lui aussi de 25 points.

James a été victime de crampes à 5 minutes de la fin et a dû être porté hors du terrain. Revenu une minute plus tard avec son équipe menée de deux points (94-92), il a, sur une jambe, planté un trois points crucial dans une ambiance de folie pour ensuite regarder la dernière minute de jeu sur le banc. Le Thunder n’a marqué que trois points dans les quatre dernières minutes, où Durant, le meilleur marqueur de NBA cette saison, n’a shooté qu’une seule fois. “On avait dit qu’il faudrait tout donner sur le terrain et finir complètement vidé, c’est ce que LeBron a fait. Il a joué avec une intensité et sur un tempo incroyables”, a indiqué l’entraîneur du Heat Erik Spoelstra.

“Beaucoup de gens ne comprennent pas que nous sommes une équipe complète et ne voient que D-Wade, CB (Chris Bosh) ou moi. Mais sans les sacrifices des autres gars, on n’en serait pas là aujourd’hui, a déclaré James. Je suis content d’avoir pu rentrer ce panier important malgré mon état.”Miami a de nouveau gagné la bataille de l’intérieur (au nombre de points marqués dans la raquette comme au nombre de rebonds) en dominant sous les panneaux une équipe pourtant plus grande qu’elle.

Le Heat a aussi réussi à étirer la défense du Thunder en se montrant adroit à longue distance (38% à trois points), un secteur où Oklahoma City a été défaillant (18% de réussite), à l’image de son shooteur James Harden. Désigné meilleur sixième homme de NBA cette saison, Harden a fini avec 8 points (20% de réussite) et 4 pertes de balle. Il n’affiche que 11 points de moyenne à 35% de réussite en finale, contre 16 points de moyenne à 47% en play-offs avant la finale. Harden est clairement la pièce manquante du puzzle offensif du Thunder et sans lui, Oklahoma City n’a pas le même poids.

Kevin Durant is a mystery even to some of the players trying to beat him.

“It’s one of those things where I respect his game, but I don’t know him, either. I know probably just as much as you guys know,” Heat guard Dwyane Wade said to Kigalidunker.com.

He doesn’t seek the spotlight and it seldom comes to Oklahoma looking for him. He rarely makes much news and wouldn’t read it anyway, preferring the quiet life LeBron James gave up any hope of when he went to Miami and promised all those championships at that big welcoming party two summers ago.

Durant instead committed to remaining in Oklahoma City that same month, bypassing a big announcement by revealing on Twitter he had agreed to a contract extension.

A few more performances like he had in the opener, when he scored 17 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter of the Thunder’s 105-94 victory, and Durant could take his place as the league’s biggest star.

Yet he pays no more attention to praise than he does criticism — unless it comes from within his organization.

“I have faith in all those things that I do day in and day out — coming in, working hard, believing in myself and my teammates, and believing in the system,” Durant said.

“Whatever happens after that, it happens, as long as I know that I come in and give it my all every single day.

“I can’t worry about what other people say or expectations they put on me. It’s just all about how I view myself and how my teammates view me and we’ll go from there.”
