APR were this weekend were crowned champions of the Rwanda Basketball league, in both men and women category. In their last fixture, in men category APR thrashed Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) by 110 points to 63 to claim the title. The victory was a convincing one for a star-studded side like APR who have in the previous seasons dominated in the Rwanda Basketball League.

In other related news starting this coming Saturday at Nyagatare in Eastern Province, Imbuto Foundation will be organizing a tournament that is directed towards the fight against malaria. Participating teams will be made up of three members per team as opposed to the usual 5.

 

The much anticipated playoff match between APR BC and Espoir BC that was supposed to take place yesterday never kicked off after ESPOIR BC were handed a walkover by the Rwanda Basketball Association, because they failed to turn up. Sources from inside ESPOIR BC reveal that the failure to turn up was due to the fact that one of their players Christophe Wazaura (alias Pappy), had lost his mother the previous Friday, and as a result the club was getting behind him to support him through that trying period.

The sources continue to indicate that the club had officially requested the Federation to postpone the match to the following weekend but instead the match was postponed until Tuesday, a day when they were still mourning the death of their colleague’s mother.

 

The walkover handed APR BC a chance to advance to the finals and they will now see a rivalry renewed as they will face Kigali Basketball Club (KBC), who are also the defending champions of the league. KBC had seen off Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) by 66-57 in a match they dominated throughout the four quarters.

Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) booked their ticket of representing Rwanda at next year’s Zone 5 club Championship. The Kigali based club achieved this after lifting this year’s national men’s basketball league title. The 2011 national men’s basketball league came to a climax over the weekend of 11-12 December 2011. KBC were crowned champions following a poor performance from other title contenders on the final day of the Championship. Games played on the final day, Rusizi smacked the National University 86 – 72 points. The Rusizi based side lost to KIE by 59 – 74 points. At the Campus gymnasium, the National University of Rwanda beat Espoir 83 – 80. Kigali Basketball Club retains the title after winning it as debutants in 2010. Meanwhile, ESPOIR finished in second position, APR BC in third position and KIE in fourth position. These four clubs qualify for this year’s playoffs games. Kigali Basketball Club and APR basketball club last year represented Rwanda in the Zone 5 club championship held in Tanzania but were unable to make it far. KBC was eliminated in the preliminary phase while APR BC was knocked out in the semi-finals.
