Umutoza w’ikipe ya Espoir Basketball Club John Bahufite, aratangaza ko afite icyizere cyinshi cyo kuzegukana igikombe cya Play – off uyu mwaka, nyuma yo gutsinda APR BBC mu mikino ibiri ku busa mu mpera z’icyumweru  gishize.

Mu mukino wa mbere wabaye ku wa gatandatu tariki ya 9/3/2013, Espoir BBC yari yatsinze APR BBC amanota 89-63, maze ku mukino wa kabiri wabaye bucyeye bwaho ku cyumweru, Espoir BBC inyagira APR BBC amanota 106 kuri 54.

Kugirango ikipe itware igikombe cya Play Offs, igomba gutsinda imikino itatu. Kuba Espoir BBC yaramaze gutsinda imikino ibiri, ngo bibaha icyizere ntakuka ko n’igikombe bazacyegukana.

Espoir BBC ifitanye umukino wa gatatu na APR BBC ku wa gatandatu tariki ya 16/3/2013, maze Espoir BC yawutsinda igahita itwara igikombe.

N’ubwo Espoir BBC yamaze kwizera kugitwara, umutoza wa APR BBC Cliff Owour ukomoka muri Kenya avuga ko bazakomeza kwitoza neza ku buryo bashobora gutungura Espoir BBC.

Mu guhatanira umwanya wa gatatu, ikipe ye Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) yamaze kuwegukana, nyuma yo gutsinda Cercle Sportif de Kigali  (CSk), imikino ibiri ku busa. Umukino wa mbere KBC yawutsinze ku manota 72 kuri 62, naho umukino wa kabiri CSK yatewe mpaga y’amanota 20 ku busa nyuma yo kwanga kuza ku kibuga.

Preparations of Gisembe basketball tournament organized by Espoir Basketball club in memory of Emmanuel Ntarugera “Gisembe” are in high gear. The tournament will kick off on 18^th January this year in Kigali.

Emmanuel Ntarugera ‘Gisembe’ was two meters tall and among the best players of Espoir Basketball Club.

He was killed during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. In an interview with the Executive Secretary of Espoir BC Richard Mutabazi, he said that they invited foreign clubs to participate in the annual tournament that will be taking place for the 5^th time.

The invited clubs include one from Burundi and another one from Congo. Teams from Burundi are; New stars, Muzinga and Urunani.  But Urunani the defending champion of this competition confirmed that they won’t be able to participate because the players were tired after taking part in the African basketball championship.

Virunga team from the Democratic Republic of Congo hasn’t yet confirmed its participation.

Rwandan clubs have not yet been invited because they want to first confirm with foreign clubs that will be attending in the one day competition.

Mutabazi says they hope for the games to be successful because preparations are so far going well.

Gisembe Memorial competition started in 1996 and Espoir the organizers of the competition won the first trophy. APR BBC has also taken it several times ever since it began.

Comme chaque année, l’équipe Espoir Basketball Club vient de débuter  la préparation du tournoi « Memorial Gisembe » dédié à Ntarugera Emmanuel. Ce tournoi débute le 18 janvier 2012. Ntarugera Emmanuel « Gisembe » fut un ancien joueur vedette de 2 mètres de l’équipe d’Espoir BBC, mort pendant le génocide des Tutsis en 1994.

Au cours d’une interview avec le secrétaire général de cette équipe, Richard Mutabazi, il a déclaré que les invitations pour les équipes de l’étranger ont été accordées. 3 équipes ont reçu des invitations à savoir  deux équipes du Burundi New Stars et Urunani, une venant de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). Mais l’équipe d’Urunani vient de décliner l’invitation car ses joueurs ayant remporté la coupe de basket Ball dans la zone 5 sont épuisés. L’équipe de la RDC ayant été invité est Virunga mais elle n’a pas encore confirmé sa participation à ce tournoi qui se déroulera à Kigali au Petit Stade à Remera.

Espoir BBC, l’equipe organisatrice de tournoi, n’a pas encore convié des équipes du Rwanda car elle voudrait savoir les équipes étrangères qui seront dans ce tournoi organisé pendant une journée. Mutabazi espere que ce tournoi se fera dans des bons auspices car le Petit Stade leur a été accordé et les joueurs d’Espoir BBC sont dans une bonne préparation en vue de ce tournoi.

Rappelons que ce tournoi « Memorial Gisembe » a débuté en 1996 et remporté par Espoir BBC. L’équipe d’APR BBC est l’équipe qui a remporte le plus de titres.

As a way of grooming future basketball players in Rwanda and reducing reliance on foreigners, Shema Maboko Didier, Moise Mutokambali and Patrick Habiyambere have engaged nurturing and training talented young players.

To implement their vision, they started training children between 11 and 17 years in 2010 at Ecole Belge in Kigali city.

Shema Maboko, an expert in basketball says that his objective is to teach and encourage children to play basketball. After training they will play for great teams here in Rwanda and for the national team.

Shema resigned from being a Technical Advisor of FERWABA (Rwanda Basketball Federation) due to misunderstandings with federation leaders who opted for foreign players while shema was busy training future basket ball players.

“Ever since I started training, my purpose is to equip children with knowledge and passion for basketball which will be of great use to them in future and the country at large”.

In order to enhance their technical know how, there will be basketball competitions next year between the chosen teams. They intend also to train for other teams’ young basketball players that rarely get chance to play in a way of grooming them to be future great players.

Shema, an international basketball referee says he has no sponsor but after sometime this program will expand and get support. Foreign players are hired and play for the teams on Rwandan passports but ever since they started coming, different people perceived the idea differently.

However, basketball fans say there is no need of spending much on foreigners when some Rwandans are talented in basketball but never given chance to prove their capability.

Minister of Sports and Culture Protais Mitali confirmed that it’s time for Rwandans to show their potential in basketball and quit the habit of relying on foreigners.

Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) booked their ticket of representing Rwanda at next year’s Zone 5 club Championship. The Kigali based club achieved this after lifting this year’s national men’s basketball league title. The 2011 national men’s basketball league came to a climax over the weekend of 11-12 December 2011. KBC were crowned champions following a poor performance from other title contenders on the final day of the Championship. Games played on the final day, Rusizi smacked the National University 86 – 72 points. The Rusizi based side lost to KIE by 59 – 74 points. At the Campus gymnasium, the National University of Rwanda beat Espoir 83 – 80. Kigali Basketball Club retains the title after winning it as debutants in 2010. Meanwhile, ESPOIR finished in second position, APR BC in third position and KIE in fourth position. These four clubs qualify for this year’s playoffs games. Kigali Basketball Club and APR basketball club last year represented Rwanda in the Zone 5 club championship held in Tanzania but were unable to make it far. KBC was eliminated in the preliminary phase while APR BC was knocked out in the semi-finals.

Angolan side Interclub basketball club emerged champions of the 17th Fiba Afrique club championship for women after defeating First Bank of Nigeria 81-55 points at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National stadium Lagos.

The victory blighted the proud record of the Elephant Girls in a competition they won in 2003.

Vincente Asirid Tumb scored twenty two points for the victorious Interclub and her contribution was not in vain as she helped the Angolan club to win the week-long tournament.

The competition had attracted Inter Club of Angola, Kenya Port Authority, GD Maculosso club, First Bank, First Deep Water and INJS(CMR).

First Deep Water gave the host fans something to cheer about after beating Maculosso 66-57 to win bronze.

Ikipe ya Kigali Basketball Club (KBC) yongeye gutwara igikombe cya Shampiyona yari yaranatwaye umwaka ushize. Ibi byaramenyekanye mu mpera z’icyumweru gishize (tariki 10-11/12/2011) ubwo hasozwaga imikino ya Shampiyona.
